So going by the older calendar this week was actually New Years for Wales and we had a party. I was...disappointed not in the event but over the fact that I was literally the ONLY faculty member to show up. At least I was well received. For that matter neither did any of our students. The only rep my school had was the Welsh liasion, two of our success coaches, the choir director, me and two faculty from Buckeye Hills (does the more certificate type jobs). Got to mess about the with mari lywd and then got roped into the twmpath dances. It's a lot like square dancing. My knee was going What the Actual Fuck Dana? We're only a month from the 5 year anniversary of being broken. You wanna revisit that? Stop jumping around one m.

Nope, knee, suck it up. Dance baby dance. Are we good? fuck no. Was it fun? Yes. I also got to make a little puppet mari lwyd. Why? because NO ONE brought their kids. If there wasn't the 20 Welsh students here on tour (your parents let you come to America?!?) there would be just like 6 of us. I wish it had been better attended but it was fun.




Now I FINALLY got my lab fixed. Registrar is like you never sent the paperwork. Oh really? Found it, the email it was in etc etc. Yeah I did. Eye roll

I have a story for today. It'll be chapter one of a long fix-it (or maybe more correctly S3 speculation). I'm only posting it here because it's not quite ready to go to AO3 mostly because I have one WIP right now and I don't want two right now. It's pretty much where I want it to be though.

Ruminating on Magiamachy, my sketch for a knockoff Fate/Stay night ttrpg. It's gotta be pvp, or it just won't work, but I also want to provide some kind of alternative win condition that isn't just "play a different game now." So: When players are eliminated, they're assigned a new playbook that represents an additional threat disrupting the Magiamachy, like "the Order of Magi wants to shut down the ritual" or "yeah it's aliens." Each of these will either alter some of the fundamental rules, making cracks to allow alternative win conditions, or they'll just straight-up have defined wincons on them.

The initial rules of the Magiamachy look like there's only one way for things to end, but as those rules are broken, new possibilities appear. plus this lets players keep playing even after their character is gone

The pink peony is open under the fly-through feeder. I might call this flower style semi-double. When fully open, a large mass of bright yellow stamens dance in the breeze. The fully-double white ones don't really show the center.  It was the first time I got a pink peony to bloom. \o/

I haven't laughed so hard in a while.

In other news, my nephew and I keep texting each other "wtf?" about everything the Mets have done (or not done) this offseason. Today we were just like, "Wtf?" The Mets now have like 17 second basemen. Hopefully at least one can pitch and one can play left field, because those are the spots they needed to fill. Now they are going to put Bichette at third and Baty in left? What is happening!?! Also, have an obligatory fuck the Dodgers!

Meanwhile, the Rangers' sell-off begins. It's the right thing but ugh, it's going to be hard if Panarin goes to Florida. I can and do root for Detroit and Dallas, but I cannot root for Florida. I guess we'll see what happens. Maybe they'll be able to foist Miller off on someone else too. *crosses fingers*

The JLE, at this point, was 50% isolated dads. Captain Atom was reconnecting with his kids after missing two decades of their lives in his own title; Animal Man (Buddy) had just seen his wife and children killed in his; Rocket Red (Dmitri) was in Paris missing his wife and kids in the USSR; and Metamorpho (Rex) had just learned about his child’s existence in JLE #5. This issue focuses on those four, mostly on the last three, MOSTLY mostly on the last ONE, as Rex decides to start asserting his visitation rights.

Difficult, long, and tedious work week requiring a touch more patience than I wished to give it - not helped by the cold snap. Although my knees did appreciate it, since I need to ice them anyhow. Nor helped by issues with subways earlier in the week, resulting in more walking and more steps.

But it's Friday, finally! Thank god. And I've got a three day weekend - since we get Martin Luther King Day off - most people do in NYC.

I can sleep in. Rest my knee. And get some chores done. Also maybe a few watercolors.

Been entertaining myself with Buffy podcasts - which require little to no attention, and I find entertaining. Did learn a few things? ( Read more... )

Finally finished re-watching Hells Bells - I've mixed feelings about this episode. It's alas a Xander episode - which well pretty much tells you everything right there. That said - it's a mixed bag? When the story is focusing on the Scooby Gange or main leads, it's actually pretty good? But when it shifts to the twenty or so never-seen, rarely seen, and never to be seen again - ancillary characters - it loses focus. ( Read more... )

I realized today why I find this show so comforting and feel the need to write about it. It's central theme is "don't give up, life is painful and hard, but don't give up, the people you meet throughout it - make it worth it". I think that's why I love the later seasons - I find them oddly to be the most relatable.

* Last book | halfway through Road Warrior: Confessions of a Male Stripper. It's... okay; I'll finish it but I probably won't keep it. Dude had some neat stories and I respect the transparency, but he's a little self centered at times and the writing's not quite up to the level where it's worth it to hold onto for craftsmanship alone.

* Last song | 1996 Expectations - Madeline Goldstein & Valkyrie - The Cruxshadows

* Last series | Gundam 0083 last year in springtime. Loved that series, it had a deceptively large cast of beautiful old men animated by those who appreciate them :3 The animation was also right in that late 1990's niche that I can't get enough of.

* Last Videogame | Elden Ring (run no2 with a katana build versus my first whip build which i'm slowly realizing was playing on hard mode XD). that said I do need to go back and finish FF:Tactics. It was good but ER I think scratches the itch that LoZ: OoT/MM left.

* Sweet or salty | I cannot do processed sweetness since it'll give me horrid headaches, but I love the bitter-sweetness of a very nice dark chocolate ~ (currently addicted to Belgium chocolates).

* Coffee or tea | i keep trying tea for #aesthetics but coffee truly has my name and number, heh.

* Favorite Food | some flavor of tuna or weirdass mixture in sushi, filet, gyoza, poke bowls and edamame. lean, light-to-medium meat dishes is how to seduce me ~

* Working on | literally just finished my fire emblem: tellius background project as of an hour ago, so relaxing for the evening and playing with this neat krita brush for fake anime cells. :)

We made it through the second week of January. This is enough to get a better grasp of progress with New Year's resolutions. It's also into the period of rapid die-off. We have reached the second Friday in January, also known as Quitter's Day because so many people give up their New Year's resolutions then. Watch for the parallel check in post over on goals_on_dw.

Feel free to copy the idea of a New Year's resolution check-in to your blog or other venue, to encourage yourself and your friends. Many people find that social support helps maintain resolutions. This is one area where online activity works as well as or better than facetime activity. Apps work too, with trackers for most popular goal categories. Consider the pros and cons of getting your friends to help. Here on Dreamwidth we have awesomeers and do_it that may prove helpful for social support of goals. Some craft communities like get_knitted and justcreate also have check-in posts.

According to an email from Facebook, the survey found that those who shared their New Year's resolution on Facebook were 36 percent more likely to stick to it. Additionally, 52 percent of those surveyed agreed that sharing their resolutions with others is helpful when it comes to accomplishing them. In my experience, saying (or posting) things out loud definitely makes them feel more real. Plus, if other people know about a goal you're trying to achieve, it may motivate you to keep working at it so you can provide future updates on your progress.

1. What is your favorite movie about a fresh start? The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, maybe? It definitely gets points for partly being filmed in Iceland with Of Monsters and Men playing haha
2. What is your favorite post-apocalyptic movie? The Road was very bleak, but well done too..Viggo Mortensen makes every movie he's in better LOL
3. What is your favorite animal movie? Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, Finding Nemo, etc
4. What is your favorite me-against-nature movie? Twister, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012: Ice Age, etc
5. What is your favorite movie about forgiveness, atonement, or mercy? The whole movie isn't about those things, but both Les Mis and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe have forgiveness/atonement in them

Yesterday, for the first time since December 13, the temperature got above 0, ending a 32 day streak, the second longest since 1908! When I went outside this morning, it was 25 degrees, which felt AWESOME haha. Since the warm wind was pushing the cold up into the hills, the temperature on Birch Hill dropped 20 some degrees in 20 minutes (Bill was watching the thermometer up on Birch Hill on his phone haha)! In the mountains, the wind could gust up to 60-80 MPH! Chinooks are so cool lol. Next week it's supposed to get below 0 again, but at least we get a few days of warmth!

At work we've gotten a few donations here and there the last couple months, and it definitely picked up this month..we EXPLODED with donations yesterday (we have to count everything, and we got in a little over 1200 items!!), and had to put some boxes in the conex! There were a lot of great books that came in, which is awesome..seeing the same books all the time definitely got old lol. I'm glad customers have stayed loyal, last summer was rough!

Iiiiit's 3 Sentence Ficathon season! Looking forward to the usual collection of prompts that make me pause and reflect that even within niche hobbies there are many people who walk through the world at a different angle to me.

I'm actually battling with a certain degree of curmudgeonly feeling towards fandom habits in general... something about not wanting to fall into the trap of arguing that shipping and self-inserts are lower forms of engaging with a story, but nonetheless feeling weary of how immediately the text can get pushed aside in the collective eagerness to focus on one's own vision for it. I've always felt a big part of the enjoyment lies in marinating in the actual canon for a while before getting all transformative about it! O for a grace period of analysis and speculation before the tag is swamped with reader insert ship headcanons.

Relatedly, Ersatz is a fun little indie project about an amnesiac waking in the trenches of an undying war. Strong aesthetics, evocative animation style, lots of juicy worldbuilding implications. Reminds me a bit of Wildbow's Twig serial, in a good way.
