The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club by Dorothy L. Sayers. Skipped to book 4 for my second try at Lord Peter Wimsey. Again I'm going to say solid but I'm not sold on loving Lord Peter. I am going to try Strong Poison per like a dozen people's recommendation. I did really like several things about this! )

The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow. LOVED THIS <3 The prose was so good and there was so much yearning and devotion and tragedy and it had time travel/time loop and academia and fighting fascism and personally I love second person so the first/second person POV was very enjoyable and it had swap POV of the (mostly) same events and secret code and dragons!? I could go on. I feel like this was written with me in mind.

Life Update

  • Andrew was discharged today and is currently napping on the couch. \o/!! That was his shortest hospital stay yet.
  • I have done something terrible to the back of my left knee, argh. At least I don't have to bike on it anymore.

Books & TV Update

  • On the second Penric & his Demon audiobook by Bujold. I'm not following it super-closely, but it's a pleasant enough tale to accompany me through chores and so on. :-)
  • Started Kdrama Can This Love Be Translated?, and I like it a lot so far. Kim Sun-ho has come so far from his geeky supporting-cast character in Good Manager (AKA Chief Kim). (Do I want to rewatch Strongest Deliveryman? IIRC, it was a bit weak, but otoh, it had enemy-to-hyung slash potential...)
  • Looking forward to watching The Pitt s02e02 tonight.

Fandom/Making Stuff

  • Inbox and tabs are out of control. I've started ruthlessly closing tabs.
  • I didn't manage to finish any gifts before [community profile] fandomtrees reveals. The last three days, I've been shuttling back and forth to the hospital for epic Scrabble bouts. I have two fics back from beta that I still hope to finish and post as late treats (both need rewrites), but I haven't had the brain to word. I spent a lot of my spare moments over the last 24 hours icing my knee and trying to draw an art gift, with no success. (Why are faces?? ;-p) So my plan is to finish the fics, and then go back and finish the things I started for Yuletide. And then go back even further and finish the thing I started for [community profile] guardian_wishlist. ;-p Also, to continue on with *Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain* in the hopes it will make me better at faces.

[community profile] fandomtrees gifts, yayayay!! I received five deliciously wonderful gifts for [community profile] fandomtrees!! FIVE!!

ETA: What is even the point of Markdown if you can't nest formatting inside lists? ;-p

Challenge #02: Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

After thinking on this one, I decided to tweak this prompt a bit and focus on animal companions from fictional stories that I love.

ormolu [awr-muh-loo]

adjective:
1 Any of several copper and zinc or tin alloys resembling gold in appearance and used to ornament furniture, moldings, architectural details, and jewelry
2 an imitation of gold.

Examples:

Clars had described the clocks in its auction catalog as 'a rare pair of Chinese ormolu bronze automaton clocks' manufactured in a workshop in the southern port city of Guangzhou. (Steven Lee Myers and Graham Bowley, They Look Like the Emperors' Clocks. But Are They Real?, The New York Times, December 2018)

No gilded ormolu appears, certainly, but pieces are not without decorative flourishes. (Antonia van der Meer, Hemingway’s Homey Cuban House, The Wall Street Journal, June 2016)

He claimed almost 100 items had been stolen, including a Persian rug worth £35,000, valuable antiques and clocks, and a 19th century red marble rococo fire surround, with ormolu inserts. (Nina Morgan, St Albans fraudster who staged burglary and committed £1m mortgage fraud jailed, Herts Advertiser, January 2019)

He was rather sorry he had come, till Lady Narborough, looking at the great ormolu gilt clock that sprawled in gaudy curves on the mauve-draped mantelshelf, exclaimed: "How horrid of Henry Wotton to be so late!" (Oscar Wilde, The Picture Of Dorian Gray)

Origin:
1765, 'an alloy of copper, zinc, and tin resembling gold,' from French or moulu, literally 'ground gold,' from or 'gold' (from Latin aurum, from PIE aus- 'gold;' see aureate) + moulu 'ground up,' past participle of moudre 'to grind,' from Latin molere 'to grind' (from PIE root mele- 'to crush, grind'). The sense of the word before it reached English began as 'gold leaf prepared for gilding bronze, brass, etc.,' then shifted to 'gilded bronze,' then to various prepared metallic substances resembling it. sixbeforelunch: An illustrated image of a woman holding a towering stack of books. No text. (woman holding a stack of books)
Snowflake Challenge: A warmly light quaint street of shops at night with heavy snow falling.

Challenge #9: Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works.

Y'know, there are a lot of tropes that I like in theory, but which have a tendency to fall flat because the idea is cool but the characterization isn't there. I bring it up because my first thought when I read this prompt was "Megastructures! Progenitors! A megastructure built by a progenitor race!" The problem is, too many stories lean on the coolness of the idea and forget to do character and relationship work and so I get bored as soon as the initial "oooh, neat!" factor wears off.

The tropes I really love in practice and not just in theory are the ones that involve jiggling the characters around and seeing what falls out. Some of the cliche common fic tropes like amnesia and body swap are great for that. Seeing two characters trying to handle each other's bodies--especially if there are powers and alien biology involved--or having one character act without the weight of memory while the other is crushed by it, that stuff is gold for playing with character and relationship dynamics.

Time-travel fix-its, where one or a handful of characters wake up in the past and are given the chance to fix something that went wrong in canon, are also a lot of fun, for similar reasons. The time-traveling character knows things that the people around them don't, and usually they have to keep it a secret. Although these sorts of fic are most satisfying when you are specifically mad at something in canon. I was pondering what a TNG time-travel fix-it would look like, and while there are things the characters would like to fix, there is nothing in the show that I as the viewer would specifically want changed ... at least not enough to care about a time-travel fix it. But MCU fix its that undo some of the dumber PTB decisions? DC fix its that fix Bruce's relationship with Jason without heaps of unnecessary angst? Yes please and thank you.

AUs are good--specifically canon-divergence "want of a nail" style AUs where one big thing went differently, or close-canon parallel universes where some things are different, but the setting is broadly recognizable are good for that too. I like them both as self-contained stories, and as stories where two universes meet and compare differences.

I like competency porn, and my definition of competency encompasses emotional intelligence. Give me two people having a hard conversation in good faith and I am there for it. I also like stories that highlight quiet competencies, especially domestic labor, emotional labor, or admin work--basically female coded stuff that'd not even enough respect. It doesn't have to be female characters, though. Anyone doing hard, unglamorous work that's shown to be important will get me, especially if it's respected in story.

I like unconventional heroes, but also conventional ones. Stories where the two team up and actually get along and respect each other are great. I'm thinking of Miss Marple and the police inspectors who know she can run circles around them and listen carefully to her advice, or Jessica Fletcher when the cop of the week is working with her rather than against her.

Ugh. I know the moment I hit post, I'll think of half a dozen more tropes I love, but I've rambled long enough.

Fanart of my fic! A new horrible ship! Writing is...happening

mossy_bench: Pink and white flowers (fic talk)
One of those bucket list fandom achievements happened to me this month: fanart of a fic I wrote!! Turns out the trick is returning to an impossibly tiny fandom and enthusiastically joining the local fanartist in their enclosure, lol. You need to be logged in on Tumblr to view it at this link, so I'll also share a direct link to the image itself. It's for the epistolary Hello From the Magic Tavern fic I wrote for Yuletide, and I love the artist's attention to detail, like Dripfang's ripped sleeve. <33

I'm nearly done with Midst season 3 (a sci-fantasy audio drama) and I must apologize to the person who recced it on the strength of its M/M mentor/mentee ship, because I was instead bewitched by the most toxic, disgusting, mutually manipulative het duo ever, Moc Weepe and Imelda Goldfinch. I love that he thought he was getting the better of her, only for it to turn out she was (smilingly) playing him like a violin the whole time.

Spoilers, but there's a moment when this scumbag mafioso-type man is begging and begging for mercy as a much older woman tortures him nearly to death, genuinely thinking it's "for his own good" even as she weeps in sympathy...idk it scratched my id something fierce. Characters who do terrible things with gentle sanctimonious earnestness, eyes wide open, are so much fun. And then the fact that he becomes a repulsive walking corpse with translucent skin that grosses out everyone who sees him EXCEPT Imelda, who wants to ride that thang—sorry! I'm obsessed!

Writing update: I need to check in at [community profile] ushobwri and [community profile] inkingitout but the gist is that writing smut is hard and every potential word choice is annoying me right now. (Disappointed that the several years I've spent writing smut does not cancel out this problem.) I'm writing still, it's just not at the clip I want. BUT I did adjust my desired emotional arc for one of the characters, so I think that should help things flow a bit better. After this installment, the series will be done, yayyy.

Some other things...
  • [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles signups close soon! I haven't properly signed up to an exchange in years but I stuffed the tagset with things I like, because who knows.
  • Having a lot of fun using [community profile] snowflake_challenge to meet people and check out new-to-me journals! I'm not fussed about participating myself, because I already have my own topics I want to journal about, but might respond to a prompt if I feel particularly inspired by one.
  • I became enamored with the idea of a hanahaki-flavored rewrite of one of the HFTMT miniseries' seasons. It would be really fun, but also time-consuming when I am trying to get languishing drafts out the door. In due time, hopefully.

How are you doing? What's happening in your neck of the fannish woods?

[community profile] caseficexchange
We have great nominations in our tagset already! If you're interested in nominating, please review our nomination guidelines. There's an opportunity to transfer accepted tags from the 2025 tagset to the 2026 tagset.

I'm seeking clarifications on the following nominations. If I could hear back about these in the next 24 hours, that would be appreciated so we can keep our nomination approvals moving.

All Media Types + Related Fandoms
Can the nominator(s) please amend their nominations? We do not accept "All Media Types" and "Related Fandoms" without a case being made.

Star Wars - All Media Types
    Din Djarin/Luke Skywalker
    Poe Dameron/Ben Solo
    Poe Dameron/Din Djarin
    Poe Dameron/Finn
    Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren

How to nominate Star Wars canons is outlined in the nomination guidelines. Can the nominator(s) please amend their nominations? If Luke and Din don't exist in the same sub-fandom, please nominate them under "Crossover Fandom".

Midsomer Murders - All Media Types
    Ben Jones/Jamie Winter

I'm happy to hear why this should be "All Media Types", otherwise please amend the canon and specify if it's the TV show or books.
    Sorted!

Percy Jackson and the Olympians & Related Fandoms - All Media Types
    Apollo/Hyacinthus (Percy Jackson)

Please amend your nomination to specify which PJO canon you're after, as we have books, TV show and movies. The fandom title will need to change. Please use one of these: "Percy Jackson and the Olympians — Rick Riordan" for books, "Percy Jackson (TV)" for the TV show, and "Percy Jackson (Movies)" for the movies. If the nominator has trouble with changing the fandom, please let me know.

Crossover Fandom

    Crossover Fandom
Peter Parker (MCU) & Percy Jackson (Percy Jackson)

I wanted to flag with the nominator that this nomination is a bit too ambiguous, unless you're fine with receiving any version of these characters. If I accept this as is, I will not be enforcing any DNWs dictating which Peter Parker or Percy Jackson version you want.

If the nominator is after a specific version for Percy Jackson, please amend your disambiguation (i.e. "Percy Jackson (PJO Books)" for the book version). If you're happy to receive the book, TV show or movie version, please let me know and I will accept this as is.

And I apologise for being nitpicky, but as we've had three Peter Parkers in the MCU (Holland, Garfield and Maguire), please amend your nomination if you're after a specific version. "Peter Parker [Holland] (MCU)" is an acceptable way to format it.
    Sorted!

Fandom renaming/fixing

    Ocean's movies
Danny Ocean & Debbie Ocean (Ocean's)
    Danny Ocean & Ocean's 8 (Ocean's)
    Lou Miller/Debbie Ocean (Ocean's)

Google tells me Ocean's 8 and Ocean's 11 exist in the same universe, so I wanted to amend the fandom title. Is the nominator against the fandom being renamed to "Ocean's 11 Movie Universe"? Happy for alternate suggestions.
    Sorted!

If the Emperor Had a Text-to-Speech Device (Web Series)
    Captain-General | Kitten & Magnus the Red (Warhammer 40.000)

I'm canon blind to If the Emperor Had a Text-to-Speech Device and Warhammer 40.000, but I've done some Googling and found that these two characters exist in this web series (I believe!). Can the nominator please update the disambiguation to reflect the web series? The disambiguation is making me think this should be under "Warhammer 40.000" as a canon instead. Happy to hear otherwise.

    Supergirl (TV 2015)
    Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor (Supergirl Arrowverse)

Please renominate under "DC's Arrowverse" as the canon as per the nomination guidelines.

Please let me know on any nominations post if you see any duplicates or errors in the tagset. Happy nominating!

I have written a little something! For the prompt any, any, defeated by a horde of small children - my fill is "Final Fantasy XI, G, nameless female adventurer and the Tarutaru trio from Chains of Promathia"

I would fill more but it's streaming night! In about an hour from this post, I'll be going live on Twitch with some Arcadion raids in Final Fantasy XIV (we're on the second tier) plus roulettes as Viper. I'm still learning Viper so don't expect wondrous DPS, but I should do decent, I think? You are welcome to come cheer me on! Or lurk, lurkers are always welcome.

Ooooh fandom_trees got revealed, I went looking for a needy tree over the holidays, found one looking for Edge of Tomorrow and thought ‘oh I have that, I should rewatch it’ and wrote this. It was my last watched film of last year and my first finished fic of this year which is pleasing to me. A nice end to my film rewatch project from last year where I pretty much wrote a fic for each film I re-watched.

Talk about your creative process.
I saw responses to this challenge start popping up on my flist and procrastinated because my initial response was lol what creative process??? because I've been blocked (in a fallow period*) for a long time now.
*[community profile] getyourwordsout community locked post

… but while I have been not writing (or not writing much), I've been doing other things and, like I said in that [community profile] getyourwordsout post linked above, Sometimes you have to let the field lie fallow. I've always written in a "boom and bust" cycle: weeks, months, or years of tremendous output (two more-or-less complete MG novel drafts in the 2015-2016 school year!!) and then weeks, months, or years of pretty much nothing… but it turned out I needed those nothing times, as much as I hate them in the moment. (Honestly time: I am in a fallow period right now.) One of my most creatively successful projects (an interactive poetry chapbook) would not exist without the hours I wasted ("wasted"?) on TV Tropes.

Unlike an agricultural fallow period, these empty times aren't planned and I can't control when they'll start or stop. I could wake up with a picture book draft tomorrow morning… or in two years. I have no way of knowing. I know some things make it worse, like work stress or not taking my meds consistently, but what makes it better? What makes it bearable?

For me, it's hands-on hobbies (crochet, doll photography), low pressure creative work (small/old/indie web design), and the boring (and sometimes expensive) everyday work of maintaining my physical and mental health. (It's hard to write when your teeth hurt.)

Extending the metaphor, some plants are good for the soil. Maybe other kinds of writing will help? Try fanfiction if you usually write original, poetry if you usually write prose, nonfiction if you usually write novels.

… all of which is to say: I got nothin' but I know that being mean to myself won't make me write more so I am doing my best to be patient and kind with myself while the world (and my day job career) is (are) on fire.

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works.

Like I said , I love wasting time on TV Tropes. One of those low pressure indie web projects I mentioned is a tropes page for my paracosm(/inner world/other world/soulscape/etc).

It would be incredibly time consuming for me to list out every trope that I like, but here my Top Five Favorite Tropes*:
*in no particular order
Please note that this list contains unmarked spoilers for TSUBASA: RESERvoir CHRoNiCLE, Kuroshitsuji(/Black Butler but I'm old), Saiyuki
  • Twin Switch: Fay Yui, my love! Also: I started reading Kuroshitsuji again after a decade of not doing that when I heard that (real!)Ciel was back!!!
  • Eye Scream: Fay again. In my defense, Tokyo Babylon/X/1999 was incredibly formative for me and Seishiro Sakurazuka/Subaru Sumeragi was my my first toxic ship and Hakkai is my favorite Saiyuki character.
  • Unrealistic Gun Fights: This isn't a TV Tropes trope but I'm using it to cover Guns Akimbo, Gun Fu/Gun Kata, Unorthodox Reload and sniper/sharpshooter characters (Riza Hakweye in Fullmetal Alchemist, Jesper in Shadow and Bone, Vash in Trigun Stampede, the Ka-Tet of 19 in The Dark Tower, Meilin in Kuroshitsuji…)
  • True Companions/Found Family: I think every single example of my favorite media has this: The Road to El Dorado, Lilo & Stitch, The Lord of the Rings, Saiyuki, TSUBASA: RESERvoir CHRoNiCLE, The Dark Tower… I am an absolute sucker for found family/true companions.
  • Portal Crossroad World/Inn Between the Worlds: I am a former portal fantasy protagonist and low key/high key always looking for my way back to one of these…
I really enjoyed this prompt because I've been thinking a lot about what tropes I like lately. I've always written very quiet stories; my two complete(-ish) middle grade manuscripts are historical fiction friendship stories about kids who aren't famous or fabulously wealthy and don't have superpowers. Lately, tho, I crave adventure and excitement in my writing and I have no idea how to do that, so I've been analyzing my favorite Big Damn Stories to figure out which tropes I like best and how to use them in my writing.

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

So to me there are 3 categories of favourite tropes: the ones i love to write, to read and both. Note that obviously i do like everything I write when it comes to tropes, but i'd say not all of they fall under the favourite tree. Sometimes some things are a lot more fun to write than to read about.
