Challenge #9: Favorite Tropes

Skipping #7 because both bragging and blatantly seeking compliments are go against moral code, and skipping #8 because if I even have a process, it clearly sucks TT I haven't completed anything in 87 years. So, my favorite tropes! Every time this question comes around I have to look up my favorite canons on TV Tropes and try to figure out why I like them.

This time I'm going with Defrosting Ice King. I like Ice Queens too, but due to what I like to read/watch my examples are mooostly M/F with the F as the main character, although there's platonic examples too. This is a really popular trope and I feel somewhat ashamed to be using it for this challenge, but I suppose I'm not so above it all. Even I feel moe when I see a gap </3 (Translation: Even I feel deep affection when I see someone do something very different from my initial impression of them.) But I like it best when it's an over-time thing! Finding out someone serious has a plushie collection at home has nothing on seeing someone serious cry over another person they swore they'd never give a hoot about later. Also the idea of someone caring about another so much that they stick with them even though they're cold or kind of mean, thus allowing them to open up, makes me :)

Rather than just being "cold," Tomoe is very decidedly an Ice King of the Jerkass variety. I'm not looking up how TV Tropes defines Jerkass though. I just know he is mean and rude and arrogant, which makes him seem awful to new people probably but it's in a comedic way I swear. Not a good person. Great househusband! 10/10, would tell him off again.

Wuxian (blue guy): "Saved me the trouble of finding you."

Hei: "Can... Can I go with you?"

Wuxian: "Of course."

Wuxian: "You sure you want to wander with me? Don't you want a home?"

Hei: "Nuh-uh. I wanna be with you."

Wuxian: "Alright."

TV Tropes says Wuxian is the Ice Queen, but I don't buy that. Even if one may assume from the beginning he's just an agent/assassin and it's later proven he's pretty chill and deadpan-comedic, it's not that Hei changed him through the power of love. It's just that there's more to him than being good at his job. On the other hand, Hei is cold and tries to escape Wuxian many times but eventually ends up sobbing at the thought of being apart from him, and that's all because of Wuxian's kindness. Hei's like a widdle Ice Prince.

Wuxian is kind of the king of that trope. To me.

Saved my favorite couple for last :33333333 I judge all love confessions by comparing it by the urgency in this one, I really do. And I like that Izark is kind and caring throughout, but still rather distant until the confession. Mean guys are funny, but nice guys are like french fries for the soul. (French fries are chicken soup to me.)

Izark has some Not So Above It All moments, but I imagined trying to find the page where he draws on the face of someone who lost a fight and sighed really deeply. Not, not today.

There's lots more examples I like, like Reika in Aim for the Ace, Michel from The House in Fata Morgana, Edmond from NU: Carnival, Sesshomaru of Inuyasha fame, Clavis (maybe Julious and possibly Lumiale too?) from Angelique, whom I really wish I could have included because he is SO funny but I can't do an entire Angelique run before the next challenge gets posted, Seung-gyu from Bad Boss in a 4D chess kind of way because Young-jo didn't even know she was defrosting an Ice King as he was Nice Guy-faking, probably Felix from Fire Emblem, and Utena has some crazy Defrosting the Ice Witch going on.

This trope has a lot in common with tsunderes, so why not just say I like tsunderes? It's technically true, many characters I like can be described as such, but I associate the word "tsundere" too much with girls who are unnecessarily abusive, not even in a hot way, so I'm not a fan of it. A tsundere done well is fun though. Kuuderes too!

If you have any ACG reccs with non-babyish art styles -- YMMV but compare Yamamori Mika's art with Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table, which is the first example I could think of LOL -- let me know :] It can be any gender combination or any kind of love.

i spent part of this weekend very cranky about not getting enough stuff done fast enough and then i realized i'm on track to finish four (4) giant projects in january alone (2 comics, tellius bg resource, gunter animatic) that have been on my plate since middle of last year.

... suddenly less cranky XD

anyway Very Cool Stuff is happening art-wise, i'm finally getting the clothes shipments/some sick doujin packages from last year and i feel like i can start for real celebrating the new year \o/

I am getting ready to delete my Livejournal. I haven't posted anything there since 2022, and all of the news about the data being sold off is making me super uncomfortable. I loved that website for such a long time, but maybe it's really time to say goodbye.

I’ve seen other people put together visual moodboards – assembling colors, stock photos, character stills, and other images that go together and evoke the feeling of that fandom (or story, or character). Scientists trace fertilizer microplastics from fields to beaches

Tiny plastic coatings from farm fertilizers are quietly reshaping the mystery of “missing plastics” in the ocean.

Plastic-coated fertilizers used on farms are emerging as a major but hidden source of ocean microplastics. A new study found that only a tiny fraction reaches beaches through rivers, while direct drainage from fields to the sea sends far more plastic back onto shore. Once there, waves and tides briefly trap the particles on beaches before many vanish again. This helps explain why so much plastic pollution seems to disappear after reaching the ocean.


That sounds like another problem that could be reduced with a ban on using plastic to make microbeads.

Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works.

Are there any trope I don't like? I'm not a fan of kid!fic (where the characters are children) or high school or university AUs or enemies-to-lovers/hate sex, but most of the rest of them are interesting.

I have read and/or written most of them.

I like genderswap. The first couple of years of writing fic I wrote nothing but genderswap BBC Sherlock.

I like supernatural AUs, werewolves, vampires, ghosts, tentacles, shapeshifting (especially wolves or dogs), animal hybrids.

I like Omegaverse, Coffee shop AUs, Detective/PI AUs. Sentinel 'verse.

There was only 1 bed. Trapped in an elevator or snowed in a cabin. Unexpected heat. Sex pollen. Hurt/comfort. Amnesia fic. Found family. Poly ships. Soulmates. Incest. Lingerie. Someone gets a puppy. Mpreg.

As a ficcer, I have come to appreciate having a friendship pairing which is as important/deep as the romantic pairing in the same fic. Also, I have a thing about, for a given sex scene, not handing out orgasms like party favors. Not everyone has to have one!

Had today off - since it's MLK's Birthday. (It's also a day of service, but alas, I'm being insanely lazy and resting my knees.)

Found out last night that my niece passed her EMT training and is a now a certified EMT. Also she may end up in Georgia at some point in May, with a course on how to prevent fires by setting them (burning off brush). My lovely niece is well on the way towards her goal of becoming a forest ranger. It's actually easier to protect trees than people. People are difficult. So, I'm glad she shifted from human rights to environmental protection and forestry.

I'm really enjoying my re-watch of Buffy and Angel. The later seasons hold up better than the earlier ones do - partly because the later seasons were done in the early 00s and not the late 1990s. So while there's still the errant - "I ran like a girl" - the other characters snort at it.

Season 7 and Season 4 Angel actually have some well-written episodes in there. Deep Down - S4 Angel, where Wes searches the ocean for Angel and rescues him, and Angel, Gunn and Fred confront Connor is a good episode. And Wes has become very interesting.

Also, the first episodes of S7 are really good. I find the series more entertaining now than I did when I initially watched it. Maybe because while I don't remember most of the details, I remember the final result, so don't have quite the same anticipation or worry that I had when I first watched it - when it aired for the first time in 1997-2003. Also, I'm not as invested in the romantic "ships"? I know they are all doomed. So, it's comforting in a way it wasn't back then. And, I'm not trying to figure out where it is going, or pulling it apart like a puzzle to figure out what will happen next. There's something to be said for not over-analyzing the plots of television shows?

They brought in Gwen to chemistry test her against Angel and Gunn, as a potential replacement for Cordelia - I can tell. She got a back story and everything.

I don't remember most of this - or enjoying it nearly this much.

Outside of television watching - I did another watercolor. Not perfect. This is of a confrontation between a little old woman with a walker and big truck that I saw ages ago in Jamaica, but can still visualize.

A year ago I was glad I'd gone to church, tidying up in the back garden, watching Dancing on Ice, enjoying the new area in Secret Cat Forest (which still isn't complete), and downloading the app for the solar panels.

Today I did a sketchy timeline for KTTK as a starter for 10. It gives me a rough idea of what Jerrick and each of the three women (and therefore their male companions) are doing at the same time. This will help with the chapters and character pov's for each of the books.

I had to go into the office today because the AI Academy was launching. We were fed and then squeezed into what was probably expected to be a large-enough room but wasn't - and then had to move to a lecture theatre. A colleague and I agreed it would have been better doing it all on the ground floor. But I am now officially a member of the first AI Academy cohort - personally selected, no less!

One of the PMs was trying to give their project updates using my Power BI reports but firstly the data wouldn't appear and then when I got it on screen it was showing out of date information! I spent some time fighting with it to no avail, so I've booked a meeting with the Power BI dev for later in the week. I shouldn't have to keep redoing the reports - unless I've actually made changes to the reports themselves! I don't know if Power BI is fussy, or it's something in the data itself that keeps making it skew. Whatever it is, it's bloody annoying.

We had tea and then I headed over to church for PCC, which was friendly and at a good pace, but still took 2 hours. And I forgot someone's name... BUT I'm not the Secretary, I'm not the only person involved in Safeguarding, and someone else has agreed to share the HPL PCC with me - so the responsibilities are shared.

And now to bed!
