Hi! Hope you're enjoying your (3-day?) weekend. :3 Today is a Lonely Prompts day. If this is your first time at [community profile] comment_fic on a Sunday, you can either request previous prompts to be filled or share your recent fills for prompts. (Or do both, of course!) ✎

How to look for prompts:
We have plenty of prompts that might just nibble away at your brain today. You can browse through the comm's calendar archive (here on LJ or here on DW) for themed and Free For All posts, or perhaps check out Sunday posts for Lonely Prompt requests. (Or, you can be like me, and try to save interesting prompts as you see 'em... and then end up with multiple text doc files full of [themes + links + prompts] that you can easily look through and search for keywords.) Multiple fills for one prompt are welcome, by the way! Oh, and you are very likely to find some awesome fills to read as well, and wouldn't it be nice to leave a comment on those lovely little writing distractions? ~_^

Whichever you decide to do, prompt or fill (or both), please remember:
1. You can only request five prompts to be filled.
2. You can request no more than three prompts from a particular fandom.
3. You can, however, fill as many prompts in as many fandoms as you'd like!
4. In the subject line, be sure to say whether it is a request or a fill!
5. You must link back to wherever the prompt is in the community archive (whether filling or requesting), and, if you're filling the prompt, please post the fill as a reply to the original prompt.
6. If you are filling an "any/any" prompt, please let us know what fandom you've written it for (or if it's original!).
8. If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
7. If you've filled any lonely prompts in the past week, this is the place to share them!
9. Finally, please remember to add your prompt fills to our AO3 collection: Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2026 collection. See further notes on this option here.

How to link:

Burn Notice, Sam/Michael/Fi, "It's always been you. And it's always gonna be you."

We are on AO3! If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3, please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2026 collection.

If you are viewing this post on our Dreamwidth site: please know that fills posted here will not show up as comments on our LiveJournal site, but you are still more than welcome to participate. =)

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so… and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

A friendly reminder about our posting schedule: Themed posts for new prompts go up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturdays are a Free for All day for new prompts of any flavor. Sundays are for showing Lonely Prompts some love, whether by requesting for someone to adopt them or by sharing any fills that you've recently completed.

This week's bread: a loaf of Marriages's Moulsham Strong Malted Seeded Bread Flour, v nice.

Friday night supper: the sorta-nasi goreng with Calabrian salami.

Saturday breakfast rolls: eclectic vanilla, turned out quite well, but even though I upped the amount of vanilla extract, not very vanilla-y.

Today's lunch: sweet potato gratin thing, with some quite decent tapenade, served with Dharamjit Singh's spinach.

The eyes, and what the eyes see

dolorosa_12: (amelie wondering)
A busy work week like the one I described previously requires a quiet weekend, so that is exactly what happened. Gym, swimming, market shopping, and a loop around the river, market, and high street today with Matthias (we bought hot drinks from the coffee rig and browsed in the bookshop without buying anything), and otherwise no other excursions out of the house. I tried making these brown butter miso chocolate chip cookies as recommended by [personal profile] rekishi, and they were very delicious indeed! I've just taken more pine and red berry branches from the disassembled Christmas wreath, and they'll go on the fire in the wood-burning stove tonight.

Two nice things happened on Dreamwidth yesterday: [community profile] fandomtrees reveals went live, and [community profile] threesentenceficathon is open for prompts and fills for 2026. I wrote one Six of Crows Kaz/Inej ficlet and made a couple of recipe recommendations for the former (and got given so many soup recipes in response to my own request — I can't wait to try them out), and in general had an enjoyable time. I haven't had a chance to plunge into the latter so far, but I always enjoy it when I do. The first post of prompts is here — I think it's a great, low-pressure way to rekindle the creative spark, and the atmosphere is always so friendly.

I've read three books, and one serialised short story this week. All but one of these (the third in a really silly romantasy series that I'm grimly carrying on with for completionist reasons; it involves human women falling in love with the personified gods of the North, South, East and West winds, and is really not good) were excellent.

The other two books were The Left-Handed Booksellers of London (Garth Nix), and The Stolen Heart (Andrey Kurkov, translated from the Russian by Boris Dralyuk). Booksellers is Nix's first foray into novel-length fiction for adults, and is set in alternative version of 1980s Britain in which the titular booksellers have a secret life acting as a sort of supernatural security service. Back when I was a book reviewer, I interviewed Nix in his Sydney office, which was packed to the rafters with all the books he used as inspiration — encyclopedias and folklore dictionaries, fiction of all genres, popular history, anthologies of folktales and mythology, etc — and I could see the varied, myriad works of this personal reference library put to good use in this novel, which is heaving with references and allusions from all sources. There's Arthuriana, British children's fantasy (such as Susan Cooper, Alan Garner, Diana Wynne Jones), Terry Pratchett, Romantic poetry, local folklore, weird bits of London history, Cold War-era spy novels, and so on. It's the sort of book that will appeal to people who enjoy playing spot-the-reference to all the ingredients of this genre salad, and Nix clearly had the time of his life writing it.

The Stolen Heart is the second in Kurkov's series of historical mystery novels in which his hapless protagonist Samson (who fell by accident into a job working for the Soviet police force in 1919 Kyiv) tries to solve another bizarre mystery while struggling to survive the chaos around him. As with the previous book in the series, The Stolen Heart is written with a careful balance of humour and empathy, conveying both the terror and the absurdity of living in a place and time of violent, destabilising transition. I haven't finished it yet, but I'm confident that I'll enjoy its conclusion.

Finally, I read 'The Road Less Taken', a serialised short story by Amal El-Mohtar. The link goes to the final chapter of the story, with links to the previous six chapters gathered at the top of the page, so if you are interested in reading it, ensure you start at the beginning. The story interweaves a relationship breakup with the recent jewellery theft from the Louvre and the folktale of Thomas the Rhymer in a manner so clever that you will feel by the end that these three things are, of course, connected in reality! It's an Amal El-Mohtar story, so all her trademarks — the power of music and of female friendships, and food and cooking as a way to show love and care — are of course front and centre.

The most recent [community profile] snowflake_challenge prompt is all about tropes: Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

Protein in the morning

susandennis: (Default)
I've been obsessively reading the reddit wegovy sub (which is rather shockingly interesting and supporting and scumless) and have learned that if I do my usual wake up and go play 2 hours of volleyball without eating or drinking anything, it might not feel great. So I'm gathering options. One option, of course, is to wake up earlier and get coffee and breakfast. That is not yet off the table. But, I also bought some crustables yesterday - honey and peanut butter - to munch on the way and just now I'm baking some egg muffins. Eggs, cheese, sausage crumbles... that I can keep in the fridge, nuke and eat on the way. I also bought some protein shakes but I'm not hopeful they will be anything other than disgusting. (However, that's how I felt about oat milk on oatmeal and I was dead wrong there.)

I went to turn on the dishwasher last night and saw that the sealant at the bottom of the door was nearly completely gone. So I placed a work order and turned it off. I'll run it today when I'm awake and can stop it if it leaks. I'd really not like to go back to washing dishes but I'd rather than than mopping floor.

I did not leave my apartment after the game started but did check the score. Ooops. Sad to be a 49er fan. I am happy not to live in the condo any more. Seahawks fans are not lovely to have in your neighborhood - especially when the team is winning. They are not in their own neighborhoods so they feel free to act like wild animals and the cleanup is always painful. I do not miss it.

Today I have plans to do the usual. Jigsaw puzzle in the elbow, TV and knitting. But also I plan to pack up all my shoes. I have paper grocery bags to put them in and I can store them on the floor on the far side of the bed. Then on Friday morning, I can take down all the hanging clothes and plop them onto the bed. I did get a note from Closets by Design to expect the install to take an hour and a half and they will be here before 11.

Ok the muffins are done.

PXL_20260118_154821262

My goal was to make them in the most simple manner possible. So. I took the silicone molds and placed them into the air fryer pan. I sprinkled in some frozen sausage crumbles. Then I added a layer of shredded cheddar cheese and poured in some eggbeater and cooked it at 350 for 20 minutes. Straight out of the oven they weren't bad. They need a few more sausage crumbles, a bit more cheese and a little bit less egg. But, I need to taste them after they have been fridged and then nuked to be sure. But, this could clearly be a viable option. It was sure easy and the only dishes dirtied were the molds and a fork I used to stir the ingredients in each muffin mold.

I turned on the dishwasher about 15 minutes ago. No leaking so far. Whew.

mid-january writing

seraphikiss: (Default)
i think i posted a writing progress log but deleted it. i deleted a lot of entries after a pretty bad anxiety spell the other night, but i want to try again. this won't be anything fancy, i'll just post whenever i have something to say in regards to my writing progress.

i currently have a goal to write 80,000 words this year, and i'm using AO3's statistics to keep track of my word count. so far i've written 10,046 words on AO3 across five one shots (some drabbles) and one chapter:

✿ mike's mid-january works ✿

somewhere i belong
i found
someone to hate (chapter 2)
come closer, dear, the storm’s getting colder
blue world
new year

i'd say for this month so far it's been... decent? i was really sick for the first two weeks of january but managed to get some stuff written for gen-uary jubilee. i tried fluffuary, but failed miserably by being days late. i am still struggling pretty badly with brain fog and a little bit of flare-ups with my sinuses and immune system, but that's kind of what happens when you live in the middle of bumfuck nowhere in the east coast.

i have a lot of works that i want to get out before the month is over, most notably my third gen-uary jubilee fic, and i also want to wrap up my ongoing long fic, erasing myself from the narrative, which only has about three or so more chapters left. i planned to end it at chapter ten, but i wanted my characters to have a proper ending, and even a new year's kiss. it started as a holiday fic but since it's now january, i'm not really sure if i have the motivation or not to finish up.

i do have another joker/mike fic in the making, and it's yet another forensics AU. i might post an entry about it later today. i really want to write more longer entries since i have a lot on my mind. i have written a LOT this month on dreamwidth, excluding the few fics that i cross-posted over from AO3.

i'm also keeping up pretty well with the [community profile] snowflake_challenge event, too, which is really nice. i struggle horribly with daily/weekly/etc. events because of due dates, but this challenge is more slow-going and easier for me to keep up with, unlike fluffuary, where if you don't post on the exact day, then you won't get your fic reblogged or promoted on tumblr. but that's a whole different can of worms to open.

in any case, i'd say that this month so far was... okay. i did go to a couple of hockey games this month to get me out of the house, and my mother is coming back from her vacation in the bahamas (which she said was overrated-dually noted). i'm really anxious about camping season starting back up, because spring is my favorite season and also the time of year that i write better during because of more sunlight. i've considered writing more while down at my campground, too. since i'm out of school, can't work, and can't afford college, i can just spend as long as i want at my camp and write in the hot tub or near the river. it'll be nice to do it again.

edit 01/18/26 8:00pm
i also did a lot of writing (and re-writing), too, namely essays about my new self-insert, elian lev. i wrote a few essays about him, from my yumeship to his backstory, and i recently wrapped up a reference sheet on how portraying elian works in the identity v setting.

another thought: i've considered doing writing prompts based on my own photography. i might actually make a community for picture prompts (providing ALT text for those with visual disabilities, like myself), so maybe it'll be something fun to do. people could post their own photography and submit one shots in response. now this would be inspired by [community profile] ficwip's monthly 1,000 words prompt event, but in this instance, you could write as much as you want, and submit photography of your own. it will have to be original, though, and no selfies or pictures of people (except silhouettes).

for the community, i'd have to figure out how to run it. i'm a one-woman show (other than the ear demons in my head) so i wouldn't know how to run it by myself. this is just a completely off-topic idea, and i'll probably elaborate much, much more later on.

and speaking of off-topic, i may have to delete and repost my fanfiction to my writing journal, [community profile] fleurseraphine, since i don't want my journal to be cluttered and mixed up. but at the same time, i like having everything in one place. i've debated this with myself for a while, and i think i'm going to go with the former.

anyway, this entry has gotten pretty long (which is... kind of my goal here).

hopefully this month continues to stay productive, and maybe if it does, i'll add some follow-ups or post a second log.

The Mistress of the Shadowland, Second Book, The next Chapter

haebin: (07)
Hello my dear ones. Thank you so much for being here and reading the next chapter. But first, I will explain a little bit what is going on, I think.
In this chapter, a new character appears who will play an important role later in the story.

This character is Linet, a young maid in a sexual relationship with Teárlach.
Their relationship is characterized by very intense, rough sex, but it occurs with Linet's consent, as I'm placing her within the realm of BDSM. This means we're entering the darker aspects of sexual experience, which are nevertheless based on Linet's consent.

I've done a lot of research on this topic, and I hope I'm meeting the needs of the sub/dom community (BDSM).

It's up to you whether you choose to read this chapter or not. Whatever you decide, please take care of yourself. ♥

The Day in Spikedluv (Saturday, Jan 17)

spikedluv: (winter: mittens by raynedanser)
I had that doctor’s appointment this morning. He didn’t even do an exam/swab, just had me tell him again the same things I told the nurse in yesterday’s messaging spree and prescribed me Fluconazole tablets. Two. Take one today and one in four days. Which naturally necessitated a trip to the Pharmacy. I took the first pill as soon as I got back to the car.

I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. I placed two orders, including Chewy. Pip’s supper was leftover chicken so no cooking, yay!

I decided to hit my own cupboard for today’s tea, The Republic of Tea’s Orange Spice (green tea blended with oranges and spices, which tells me exactly nothing new o_O). I was worried it would be strong because of the spice part, but I was reminded just how weak green tea is.

I handwrote ~2,300 words on my [community profile] smallfandombang fic!! I was on a roll, and I can hardly believe it! And I even read more in Husband Material.

I also watched the Bills game, which was a heartbreaker. So close, and yet so far. They did it to themselves, though, so Denver deserved the win as much as I hate to say it. Interceptions and penalties are not going to win you the game. Congratulations, [personal profile] mistressofmuses!

Temps started out at 25.7(F) and reached 36.5. We were supposed to get less than an inch of snow, but got a bit more than that, with more expected overnight. Yay.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded okay when I talked to her; she actually sounded a bit tired. She said she had mostly felt well during the day, but at that moment was feeling a little off. Both Sister A and S were visiting, so that was nice.

Snowflake Challenge #9: Your Favorite Tropes

snowynight: Black cat icon (Yearning cat)
 Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

My favourite trope is pining, because it can lead to easily resolvable angst and heartbreak. I like when characters stoically pine from afar without feeling of entitlement. I like when characters have very good reasons to expect their feeling to be unrequited (and happily proven wrong).

My current fandom Conclave (2024) is ripe for pining when the main characters are all Catholic priests and nuns,  who swear vows of chastity. So much delicious angst: do you want to break your lifelong vow? Do you really want to tempt your love interest from breaking their vow? Do they want to? Not to mention the power difference between the pope/cardinals; superiors/subordinates. So ripe for pining!
