Fanfic year in review! This is probably not interesting to anyone but me but I actually wrote stuff this year which was a miracle so I'm celebrating with this meme I borrowed from a few different people.
STATS FOR 2024
Total fics: 10
Total words written: 33,379 (+3k for an unpublished but mostly completed fic)
Fandoms:
Did you write more than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
Definitely more! I am not a fast or prolific writer so I'm amazed I wrote this much haha. I think joining some exchanges for the first time definitely helped.
Where did you publish/archive your stories?
On AO3 at
starkly! But I have also been archiving my recent fics at
fairykiss on Dreamwidth too.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
I feel like I never used to branch out into new fandoms this much, so all of this is somewhat unpredictable. Maybe Captive Prince or Last Binding? I'm always wary about writing for a book series because I feel like so much slips my memory the farther I get from the initial reading, more so than canons of other mediums. But I also re-read both of those series this year so that definitely helped.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Nothing in particular was that far out of my usual wheelhouse; it's all one-shot shippy fic of moderately short length. I suppose the biggest risk was writing original fiction for the first time in ages, and it was for an exchange so that could have gone badly lol. But I think it turned out okay! I'd forgotten how fun it is to write original stuff sometimes.
What’s your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Probably letters to an uncertain lover (Original Fic, Fantasy M/M), the aforementioned original fic! It was really fun to write and somehow I ended up getting 10k out of it. To be fair, it's a very tropey fic and I was fresh off my Captive Prince re-read so I was 100% coasting off similar vibes for the worldbuilding so it's not like I was crafting some complex original world, but I'm still surprised it turned out so well.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
#1 Ally Jayce Talis (Arcane, Jayce/Viktor), easily. It was published 2 weeks ago and is my most kudos'd fic of the year. No surprise though, given the size of the fandom and how niche my other fics are.
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
A pointless fluffy F/F fic, Sunlit Moments (Octopath Traveler II, Agnea/Throne), only has 5 kudos and 42 hits, but that's also not surprising.
Story that could have been better?
I feel like all these fics are as good as they were ever gonna get given my skill level/motivation/aversion to editing. I was most unsatisfied with the Charon/Hermes Hades fic I finished but never published because I kept feeling like something was missing but couldn't put my finger on what, hence the lack of posting. Maybe I'll take a look at it again now that it's been a while and see if I can fix what's missing. Or just post it as-is lol.
Most fun story?
What does this even mean, most fun to write? Story that contains the most shenanigans? I'll say #1 Ally Jayce Talis (Arcane, Jayce/Viktor) because it's very stupid and humorous and I zoomed through writing it a lot faster than my normal pace. Completely unserious story.
Sexiest story?
Well, the story with the most sex is Taking the Lead (Last Binding, Maud/Violet) since it's a PWP so that's the obvious answer.
Story with single sweetest moment?
So much of my stuff is fluff I don't know if I could pick a fic for this... I'll say Renewals (Captive Prince, Ancel/Berenger) because it basically contains a marriage proposal and I'm a sucker for proposals. Also I just love them and their banter.
Saddest story?
I didn't write anything sad this year! There's some pining but I think that's about as sad as it gets? So I'll say Inexorable (Final Fantasy XVI, Dion/Joshua) solely for being a fix-it fic that mentions the averted sad canon events lmao.
Most fucked-up story?
None of those this year either! I don't write much fucked up stuff I guess, mostly because I'm not that creative. I do love a good toxic ship though.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters?
Nothing for this one either, I don't think anything I wrote this years was particularly deep or serious...
Hardest story to write?
Taking the Lead (Last Binding, Maud/Violet), for the combination of: 1) being written for an exchange, 2) being primarily smut, 3) the amount of times I had to look up 1910s fashion details, 4) being written so close to the deadline which is my own fault but shhh.
Easiest story to write?
Same answer as the most fun question above, #1 Ally Jayce Talis (Arcane, Jayce/Viktor) which I wrote in less than a week. The power of jokes compelled me. Also the Christmas deadline but mostly the jokes.
Most overdue story?
None, really. These were all new ideas or new fandoms. When I give up on a WIP I tend to forget it ever existed haha.
Biggest surprise?
Writing so much! Taking a look at my AO3 stats, my 2023 word count was 8,733 words, so a big jump between 2023 and 2024!
Favorite Opening Line(s)?
Me, cracking open all my fics to look at the openings: wow I am bad at first lines. These are all written like a 6th grader's essay thesis statement. I suppose the least terrible are:
“I don’t think the house likes me.”
- Taking the Lead (Last Binding, Maud/Violet) just because out of context it's kind of funny.
Zagreus opens his eyes and sees only darkness above him. For a moment he worries that he’s somehow damaged his vision, and he wonders how that could be possible—hit his head too hard, perhaps?—until a face appears in his line of sight, peering down at him. Ah. His eyesight is fine. That’s only the darkness of Tartarus looming above—as well as a mildly concerned-looking Thanatos.
- take my hand (now and forever) (Hades, Zagreus/Thanatos) which is a paragraph and not a line but I just love Zagreus.
Favorite Closing Line(s)?
Wow my closing lines aren't much better. I think the ending scenes to Taking the Lead and #1 Ally Jayce Talis are good because they're brief and funny lmao but for this one I'll go with:
Maybe tomorrow Dymitr will be more willing to talk. Most likely not. Niko has contented himself with picking away at the shell surrounding him, reveling in every new thing he learns. He feels like he’s only just scratched the surface, but he’s certain that what he finds underneath will be just as beautiful as what’s outside—messy and dangerous and painful, but beautiful all the same.
- in the eye of the beholder (When Among Crows, Dymitr/Niko) because I just realized I didn't mention this fic yet and I really love it.
Most revealing story?
All of them sjhdfksjfsd ?? Maybe letters to an uncertain lover (Original Fic, Fantasy M/M) because I really just went ham with a bunch of my favorite tropes. (The arranged marriage, the pining, the stupid misunderstanding, the smut, etc.)
Honorable mentions?
Adding this in because I want an excuse to mention these two fics which I didn't get to mention yet. These were the first fics I wrote this year, both for the 2024 Final Fantasy Kiss Battle, after not writing/posting anything for months. Respite (Final Fantasy XVI, Cid/Clive/Jill) and Drinking Buddies (Final Fantasy XVI, Otto/Cid) you will always be famous (to me) for revitalizing my writing drive.
Story I haven't yet written, but intend to?
I'm currently working on a first time Jayce/Viktor fic and I've got notes jotted down for ANOTHER Jayce/Viktor smut fic so you can see where my head is right now.
Fic-writing goals for next year?
Just keep writing! Every year I say my resolution is to write more, but whether I actually accomplish that is very up in the air. I don't know if I'll do as many exchanges again, but I hope to try to actually participate in more fic challenges like bingos, fic memes, etc. Instead of just keeping the page open in a tab for several weeks and then deleting it without trying anything.

"I don't think the house likes me" sounds like the opening to a horror story about a haunted house haha!
I have the same resolution. We got this.

Good luck to you and your writing this year too!
