Spent the last couple weeks watching too much TV; I'm all caught up on Agatha All Along (up through ep 6) and I binged all four seasons of Miss Scarlet and the Duke so now I have to ramble.
My mom and I are both fans of historical mystery shows with lady sleuths (Miss Fisher, etc.) so she got me to check out Miss Scarlet which is set in Victorian London. Eliza Scarlet, whose father was a private investigator and has always wanted to follow in his footsteps, takes over the business after he suddenly dies. Of course there's a love interest guy who's Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard, the aforementioned "duke" in the title. (I had to look up why they called him that because he is definitely not titled sjdhfjsdhfs his last name is Wellington, as in Duke Wellington, so his cop buddies call him Duke. Which is not explained in the show until like season 4 when someone outright makes the association lmao.)
Unfortunately for me, Wellington kind of sucks and all he and Eliza ever do is butt heads--and not in an endearing rivals-to-lovers sort of way even though they're meant to be old friends. If you told me Wellington didn't support women's suffrage I would believe you. Like at one point Eliza is upset that Wellington didn't mention her name to a journalist re: a case they were working on, which Wellington didn't do because he was being promised a promotion at Scotland Yard if he made sure the department/his boss looked good in the article; only when his boss passes him up for the promotion anyway did he have the newspaper make the article about Eliza's work instead. That doesn't make him nice, that makes him look like a dick!!!
And apparently the show agrees with me because they never get together and I think Wellington is leaving the show ??? So thank god. I feel like they could have at least tried to make the relationship improve but MULTIPLE times Eliza had the chance to say something and didn't, so I have no idea what the writers were doing there. I guess they wanted to drag out the will-they-won't-they drama, but they clearly waited too long! In their defense I suppose they had doomed themselves from the start because Eliza was never going to get married to someone who would want her to stop being a detective to have babies and stuff, so unless Wellington got real cool about a lot of stuff real fast, it was never gonna happen.
Otherwise though it's a fun enough show; not as good as Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries in terms of overall fun, but it's still an enjoyable period piece/murder mystery. All Eliza's other friends/colleagues are much better than Wellington. I really enjoy her interactions with Ivy, her housekeeper/surrogate mother of sorts, and with Nash and Moses, a rival private investigator and a criminal associate of hers, respectively. (And both of whom would be way more interesting love interests for Eliza, it's truly my curse to only ever be into het ships that aren't canon.) They could've also done something interesting with Arabella, Eliza's old schoolmate who she was antagonistic with, but instead Wellington just started dating her so the show could make Eliza sulk futilely I suppose. (Arabella also would've been a better love interest for Eliza!! That's a real rivals-to-lovers ship!) Even Fitzroy, the cute newbie detective who works under Wellington, would have been a better love interest for Eliza sjdhfjsdfsd literally I am living in a hell world where THREE different het ships would have been better than the canon attempt, absolutely tragic that the writers can't see my vision.
I also wandered onto AO3 after finishing the 4th season and it was like entering an alternate dimension because like 95% of the fic is Eliza/Wellington. I'm so sorry to straight women for this show disappointing you, but my god. There wasn't even ANY questionable Wellington/Fitzroy content? I'm not so pressed that I'm going to start writing Miss Scarlet fic lmao but it is so far removed from the ratio of types of fanworks I normally see in my fandoms sjhsdkfjdsf.

I wasn't initially going to watch Agatha All Along, on account of I hate everything they've done with Joe Locke's character. Bad casting and I don't have high hopes for the backstory reveal I assume is coming in episode 6. But I was still kind of curious because I enjoyed Kathryn Hahn as Agatha in WandaVision so I decided to check it out lmao and unfortunately they got me with the lesbians!! I had no idea Aubrey Plaza was going to be in this, but I am living for whatever the hell Rio and Agatha have going on. They are so insane. When Aubrey Plaza licked Kathryn Hahn's bloody palm I was like okay I am gladly being queerbaited by the MCU in the year 2024. I need to know their full backstory ASAP. (Also both of them looked sooo good in the episode with the '70s costumes, awoooga etc.)
The other witches are interesting too, and I'm enjoying the Road's trials and everything. I just wish they didn't involve *spoiler* boy at all WAIT as I am typing this up I realize episode 6 airs tonight doesn't it. I completely forgot it was Wednesday. I will return to add my new thoughts before posting this lmao.
*24 hours later* I'm back having watched episode 6, so SPOILERS FOR EP 6 IN THE REST OF THIS SECTION.
Now I don't have to dance around Billy's name for the three people watching this show who don't know anything about Marvel comics. Sooo funny they just had him take over William Kaplan's dead body. Like I know the comic origins of Billy and Tommy are slightly convoluted but I'm sure they could have come up with some BS magic excuse for how they were reborn. Are we just pretending he wasn't only 10 when the Hex came down and thus is actually 3 years younger than everyone realizes? They did make the Kaplans Jewish but Billy was not raised with them so it's kind of like, okay, so? lol. Didn't cast a Jewish kid and didn't raise him with his birth family so he's still not Jewish, it doesn't fix anything! Actually, lmao wait, what they did do was kill a Jewish character to replace him with a white boy sdjhfkjsdhf ??? (Not that I expected anything else, given how the MCU handled Wanda and Pietro, but it feels like an extra kick in the teeth for no reason.)
Anyway, I'm not surprised! There's like zero of comic Billy in him except for I guess his determination to get Tommy back. Hopefully they sweep all this under the rug now his backstory episode is done and go back to Agatha and Rio and bring back the other witches etc. and get back to the good stuff. (::doubt::)

Oh my god I went on about TV so much lmao, that's enough for this entry. In other news, the reveals for
fandomgiftbasket happened! I received two lovely fics--

I wanted to write more but I have just not been feeling any motivation lately... Hopefully that will change since I also signed up for
yuletide! Which I've never done before, but it seems so popular and people always seem to enjoy it, so why not. I missed nominations by like, a day lol but some fandoms did catch my eye thankfully, so I decided to give it a try this year.

New byflashforeward (When Among Crows, Dymitr/Niko + Ala)
Dymitr considers his life now.
The fantastic and wonderfulevilinsanemonkey wrote me a When Among Crows fic! ♥ I'm no longer the only author in the fandom wahoo!! It's a lovely little found family drabble and was such a nice surprise to receive. 🥹
Braids byAutisticWriter (Final Fantasy VII, Aerith/Tifa/Cloud)
As Cloud sleeps, Tifa braids Aerith’s hair for her. Which gives Aerith an idea for how to playfully mess with their sleepy boyfriend.
The just as wonderfulautisticwriter wrote me some soft Aerith/Tifa with a side of bothering Cloud. A very cute fic set during the downtime of their travels with an adorable ending. ♥
--and I did manage to write one fic for someone!
Sunlit Moments (Octopath Traveler II, Throné/Agnea)
Agnea takes Throné out for a relaxing afternoon in the sun, but things go a little bit downhill...
A first attempt at Octopath fic! It may have come out a little overly fluffy but I had fun with it.
I wanted to write more but I have just not been feeling any motivation lately... Hopefully that will change since I also signed up for

This will be my first yuletide too, it's one of those events that I had always seen but also always missed sign ups for. I hope it goes well for us both!

Yay, I hope your fic writing goes well and you get a good gift in exchange! :D
