A Final Fantasy VII Rebirth update! As of writing this, I am approx 50% through the game and have just reached North Corel. Sadly I had to give the game back to the library so I'm on a short pause until I can borrow another copy lmao. For now some thoughts adapted from the liveblog commentary I sent my friend while playing:

I love the party banter in this game so much. This is what FFXVI was missing by not having a real party!! The 2k gil joke, Cloud teasing Barret about not wanting Marlene to grow up and leave him, Tifa pushing Cloud into the frog zone. All the side quests where Cloud teams up with someone in the group so you get their comments/interaction are nice little touches.

I love how stupid this game is. The frog side quest. The dog named Salmon. The dolphin.

I got an A+ in parade, something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve.

Rocheeee I love him so much, I love that he's basically Cloud's gay stalker and Cloud is just like *shrug* about it. Truly the best new character in these games, WHAT is wrong with this man. I imagine literally everyone he works with at Shinra hates him so much. Imagine walking into work at 8AM and your coworker is already there doing backflips on his motorcycle and monologuing about some random guy who beat him up last week.

I love how the remake has been showing how cute and awkward Cloud is no matter how much he tries to be cool and aloof. Taking the 3 steps back from the changing stalls because Aerith tells him to, nearly letting Yuffie die because he didn't want to touch her chest for CPR sdjfhskjfshf. This boy is mentally a 16 year old virgin he is not cool!!

Barret in his sailor outfit, my beautiful angel T-T Thank goodness they kept that in.

Rufus is sooo sexy but his outfit is sooo bad in anything other than PS1 five-polygons-per-character graphics.

Love that the 7th Infantry is ready to die for me now that I got them an A+ in parade.

I also love that half this game is a woeful tale about the destruction of the earth and the other half is playing card games on a cruise ship. Also I'm suing them for discrimination not letting Red play cards.

I had complained about them not doing the whole Red disguised as a human thing but removed it from this writeup since they did it, those wild and crazy kids, they really let Red do the Shinra uniform disguise sjhdfkjshdkfjs

Every time the plot comes back I'm like ??? WHY are these bugs fusing with the robed guys. What even are the bugs. When Cloud hasn't been gay enough lately he has to hallucinate Sephiroth though so that explains that at least.

Costa del Sol!!! Cloud wearing a lei riding on a Segway just crashing into furniture and people without a care in the world is a close second to Red acting human as the funniest thing in this game.

Tifa and Aerith beach date!! Also Red going ham (lol) over some ham and playing puppy soccer lmaooo

This game ruined my life by the way I've been pronouncing cactuar wrong my entire life. No I don't care that it's my own fault for not being able to read as a child. I am NOT pronouncing it kak-too-ar!! Kak-tar for life!!

I actually didn't have any liveblog comments on Yuffie which is weird, but does it seem like they made her more annoying? I say this entirely with love, Yuffie was my favorite character when I played the OG game haha. They've done a good job showing that she's only 16 or whatever this time around, I'm pretty sure I didn't realize she was that young originally, though that may partially have been because I was younger than that then and thus everyone seemed like Cool Older Adults to me.

Upcoming sad Barret backstory :( I loved Yuffie rushing to defend him when everyone was being mean to him upon entering Corel.

In general, I'm having a really good time with this game, it's fun and silly and I love fun and silly. There's definitely a critique to be made about how it's a little TOO silly at the detriment of the actual storyline, which gets drawn out with all the side quests and things in between actual plot beats. But it still has me wanting to keep playing ughhh I want to get to the Gold Saucer!! Date night!! (I'm not aiming for anyone in particular I'm just going to let the chips fall where they may lmao.) I want to see Cid and Vincent!! I want to know what the hell is going on with the Zack alternate timeline or whatever that is!!
