Snowflake (days 7-8) and other fannish catching up

Some fannish catching up!

1) [community profile] fandomtrees still has 3 trees below the minimum number of 2 gifts, and is thus at risk of delaying reveals again (currently scheduled for Jan 17 reveals), with the decision on delaying to be made the morning of 1/17. Needy trees are mastershield's Tree (f:astro boy, f:balan wonderland, f:kingdom hearts); kalloway's Tree (f:brave nine, f:crossovers, f:fire emblem, f:granblue fantasy, f:gundam, f:kingdom of heroes, f:super robot heroes) whoremoantreatments' Tree (f:advance wars, f:bleach, f:hypnosis mic, f:kuroko no basket, f:pokemon, f:tales of berseria, f:the world ends with you). (List kept updated here.) All of these are open to fic, and the minimum fill for fic is only 100 words, if anyone knows these fandoms and can help out.

(My tree has above the minimum number of gifts but is here, and I’m eager to see what’s on it :)

2) I should’ve mentioned this earlier, but it’s been a crazy couple of weeks. [personal profile] lunasariel is hosting a sync read of To Shape a Dragon’s Breath in her DW here. Currently it’s her, me, and [personal profile] cyanmnemosyne reading along, but contrary to the name, we don’t actually have to be all synched up to participate, so if (like me) you’ve been meaning to read this book for a while, or if you’ve read it already and want to follow our impressions as we make progress through it, come join! I am currently just past halfway, [personal profile] lunasariel is 10-20 chapters ahead of me, and Cyan has just recently started. (And yes, my thoughts on this book are ~50% on the chemistry. Actual Periodic Table of Elements chemistry, I mean, not chemistry between characters, although I’m enjoying that too.)

3) Snowflake catch up!

Snowflake Challenge: A flatlay of a snowflake shaped shortbread cake, a mug with coffee, and a string of holiday lights on top of a rustic napkin.

The problem with doing Snowflake every year for the last, uh… 10 years, I guess? – is that for repeated questions like this, which are about ME as opposed to about my fandoms or projects or objects, which can accumulate it is much harder to come up with something new to say! Both of these questions fall under that category, and so were more challenging than most for me to answer. But let’s see if I can come up with something without repeating myself.

Challenge #7: LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

I do want to stick to fandom-related things I like about myself for this one, so, hm. Last time I answered this question seems to be in 2017 (and my things were “good fannish role model for my children”, “thorough and detailed in talking about what I’m reading/watching”, and “conscientious beta”) and the first time in 2016 (my answers were “good fannish baba/matchmaker”, "committed to fannish crack”, and “conscientious about fandom participation”) – and I do still feel those things are all applicable to me and I still like them. But I’ve done a bunch of new things in the last 9 years, from attending conventions to paying attention to the Hugos to signing up for Yuletide, so let me focus on those new things and see if I can extract three new things I like about myself fannishly from them.

things I like about myself viz conventions, fanfic, and Hugos )

Challenge #8: Talk about your creative process.

This is another one I’ve done before, in 2019 and in 2015, but looking at even the 2019 one, I talked about fannish poetry and graphics, but not about fannish prose/fanfic. So clearly that’s what I should talk about, but what IS my process?

request box, future writing

A bit ago I made a request box, mainly for the purpose of people sending ships and prompts to request for writing, mostly as an optional thing to do if I feel like it. Felt like a nice thing to do, especially as it could be a fun way to write for some ship and characters I normally don't, haven't really though of before or simply didn't know what to write about without a prompt or something of the sort.

I've gotten maybe 2 requests, but neither of them are actually specific enough for me, since they don't have an actual prompt. I think people might not be aware what a prompt is, somehow. I think it would be fun to sometimes get those, but I haven't really shared it much besides the initial time when I made it. I'll probably put the link to it in my pinned entry here too. I do need to update the ship lists too, mainly the Limbus one.

With canto 9 now properly done, I am not okay still, lmao. Way too many stuff going on, without saying too much, imma need an intervallo follow up on everything that happened with Gregor because what the fuck? I often joke how I love torturing him in my writing, but after that, the most he's gonna get is mild inconvenience for the next few months. Let the man rest. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but still. Lets just say that the next few fics will be a lot less intense than I initially planned to.

I was initially thinking of writing 'Psyche Luger' once Febuary was done alongside the 'Sinclair lies about his age' fic, but I do think that after all of that I'll move it for later just a little bit. I do have a specific gregclair fic that has been on my mind for a while that I want to write for Gregor's birthday (my boy has the worst case scenario for everything with the birthday being 29th Febuary) which I initially wanted to write for gregclair day. It feels like it fits more for the birthday as it's from his pov and how he feels about Sinclair compared to what I wrote for their ship day. I think it's better this way, not to mention I wasn't particularly in the mood to write that one at the time.

I also went back to the project moon kink meme after a while, I'm already seeing canto 9 stuff. That last one as of the day I'm posting with Gregor is quite interesting, I'm not gonna lie, but I don't think I have the skills for that. I would love to write some of the fills from there (i have some marked for writing but I haven't gotten around them yet) but I always feel like my personal ideas kinda go first. There are some neat ones I'd like to do sooner or later though.

sticker alternatives

This is old news, but Stickermule has shown their asses again by giving away free pro-ICE merchandise, so people have been scrambling for other suppliers for custom stickers. I'm thinking about ordering stickers of my art by Harmonycon. I can't keep up with a million tweets and my Bluesky feed is already scrambled, so here's what I've found:

https://www.standoutstickers.com/
https://stickerguy.com/
https://thestickybrand.com/en-ca (limited time deals page is worth looking at)
https://thestickerlad.com/home (website looks like a WIP but furry-owned. Prices are ok)
https://stickerninja.com/ (this looks like Stickermule's biggest rival)
https://unionmadestickers.com/en-ca (you can probably use them for non-union stuff lol)
https://stickerblitz.com/ (another rival with good prices)
Vograce orders from China but I've had a good experience ordering sample packs and one-off keychains from them. YMMV. It's better for physical goods. Not sure of any alternatives that let you do one-off orders.

After I edit some art with a signature, I might "trial run" some of these? I have a few paychecks before Harmonycon... Hours are tight but some of these are cheap enough.

This issue with Stickermule is it's the only option I know that lets you print one-off tshirts. I don't know who else does that. Redbubble's prices for making a private design and buying it yourself are inflated.

Side note, is there an external program or some other way to mass-edit DW entire? I have some cleaning up to do and want to mass-private / lock posts without viewing each one individually....

Fanworks Stats Meme

From [personal profile] snickfic and [personal profile] slippery_fish.

Go to your Works page on AO3, look at the tags, and see what the answers to these questions are. (Or any other site that has tags)

I'm going to go off both my fic journal ([community profile] feast_of_fanfic) and my AO3 page ([archiveofourown.org profile] Muccamukk). The DW has a handful more fic, and a slightly different rating/tagging system, but should be roughly the same.

  1. What rating do you write most fics under?
    DW: Teen.
    AO3: Teen and Up Audiences.

  2. What are your top 3 fandoms?
DW: Band of Brothers, Marvel 616 & tie of Babylon 5 and The Pacific.
AO3: Band of Brothers, Marvel 616 (then several subcategories thereof), The Pacific.

  3. What is your top character you write about?
    DW: Don't tag for characters.
    AO3: Richard Winters (BoB)

  4. What are the 3 top pairings?
DW: Nixon/Winters (BoB), Steve/Tony (Marvel), Band of Brothers Rarepair.
    AO3: Nixon/Winters (BoB), Steve/Tony (Marvel), Andy/Eddie (The Pacific).

  5. What are the top 3 additional tags?
    DW: Drabbles!, PWP, Canon-Era H/C.
    AO3: Canon Era, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Post-Canon.

  6. Did any of this surprise you? e.g. what turned out to be your top tag.
Only giving each fic one genre each on DW skewed the tags much differently from AO3, for the last question. I've also posted a bunch of drabbles to DW that didn't make it to AO3, so that probably also moves the numbers (like tying B5 with The Pacific). If one includes HBO War and Marvel comics each as one fandom, it would go HBO War, Marvel Comics, Babylon 5.

It also leaves out some of my most popular fic, which are for fandoms I didn't write for as much, but got a couple one hit wonders that sailed to the top of my stats page.

(Any word on DW figuring out what's wrong with the AO3 user profile logo? I gather it's some kind of import problem.)

Really good episode. I loved seeing Norm in the world, seeing him interacting with people, kind of re-tracing Lucy's steps in a way. He has grown so much.

Lucy and the Ghoul – such a great storyline. Lucy losing herself to the drugs, her addiction making her worse as a person. The Ghoul betraying her – that scene was amazing.

I also really liked the flashback this time around. Cooper and House were so interesting together and I'm kind of fascinated with House. I also kind of ship them.

The Huntress, by Kate Quinn

In this engrossing historical novel, three storylines converge on a single target, a female Nazi nicknamed the Huntress. During the war, we follow Nina, one of the Soviet women who flew bomber runs and were known as the Night Witches. After the war, we follow Ian, a British war correspondent turned Nazi hunter, who has teamed up with Nina to hunt down the Huntress as Nina is one of the very few people who saw her face and survived. At the same time, in Boston, we follow Jordan, a young woman who wants to be a photographer and is suspicious of the beautiful German immigrant her father wants to marry...

In The Huntress, we often know what has happened or surely must happen, but not why or how; we know Nina somehow ended up facing off with the Huntress, but not how she got there or how she escaped; we know who Jordan's stepmom-to-be is and that she'll surely be unmasked eventually, but not how or when that'll happen or how the confrontation will go down. There's a lot of suspense but none of it depends on shocking twists, though there are some unexpected turns.

Nina and Jordan are very likable and compelling, especially Nina who is kind of a force of nature. It took me a while to warm up to Ian, but I did about halfway through. Nina's story is fascinating and I could have read a whole novel just about her and her all-female regiment, but I never minded switching back to Jordan as while her life is more ordinary, it's got this tense undercurrent of creeping horror as she and everyone around her are being gaslit and manipulated by a Nazi.

This is the kind of satisfying, engrossing historical novel that I think used to be more common, though this one probably has a lot more queerness than it would have had if it had been written in the 80s - a woman/woman relationship is central to the story, and there are multiple other queer characters. It has some nice funny moments and dialogue to leaven a generally serious story (Nina in particular can be hilarious), and there's some excellent set piece action scenes. If my description sounds good to you, you'll almost certainly enjoy it.

Spoilers! Read more... )

Quinn has written multiple historical novels, mostly set during or around WW2. This is the first I've read but it made me want to read more of hers.

Content notes: Wartime-typical violence, gaslighting, a child in danger. The Huntress murdered six children, but this scene does not appear on-page. There is no sexual assault and no scenes in concentration camps.

Top 10 Photographed Fashion Game Fits
To qualify:
1. It must be an outfit I put on my player character, not something coordinated for an NPC or another player.
2. It must be from a pre-existing screenshot. I cannot open the game, make new outfits, and take new pictures. Or else I would play all day and never have the time to make this post.

All fits are from Style Savvy: Styling Star (worse graphics), Fashion Dreamer (better graphics), and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (chibi/toy-like graphics). No Splatoon fits because I lost them all during The Purge. So it goes.

* Babygirl has been sent back down to the AHL. I would be distraught, but I doubt he'll be there long.

* There is a team-building aspect to hockey, the inter-league weirdness and contracts that I am not looking into right now. There is a lot to the sport and I am trying to take a balanced approach... except when it comes to arena conversion videos. I will watch footage of areas switching back and forth between rink mode endlessly.

But, it is weird to me that Canada, who are so serious about player development, pretty much force NHL teams to roster Canadian draftees early or lose them to their juniors teams. And sometimes that means keeping then on the NHL roster and just scratching them every night, so no ice time. Top Canadian talent don't get a stepping stone between juniors and NHL the way other prospects do. We need to either not play them while they train and bulk up with no real play, or let them be penalty bait. We've gotten goals off of how hard other teams go after our youngest player, but that's not great.

New Year, New Dentist

First ever visit to our new Dentist (that is actually IN Sooke, No more treks to Colwood for appointments *yay*). 💕

Don't get me wrong. There was nothing wrong with our old Dentist. We actually quite like him. But the travel time and trying to schedule around Aaron's work was getting harder and harder, so it was just time to switch.  And since Aaron had already been to the Dentist in Sooke for an emergency recently (our Dentist was not available), he already knew he liked the work they do so far and the way their office is.

Plus they are open Monday thru Saturday! Amazing!😍

Anywho, We had our initial admitting appointment yesterday afternoon. Paperwork, X-rays, and an initial assessment of the teeth.💕

All looks great still for me. *phew* I do have a couple old white fillings on the right side (upper and lower) that will get replaced in Feb., as they've shrunk quite a bit. I could have deferred till next year, but figured our insurance just rolled over, and so doing it now was better. 😄

So, I'm getting a cleaning on the 24th (A Saturday! Holy crap, we have a Dentist that's open on a Saturday now!).  And then, the first week in February, my fillings will get dealt with *hooray!*. I'll need to remember to take Advil before hand.

Aaron's got British teeth, ie: They tend to crack and break down more easily. And so he'll have to have a lot more checked on as time goes on.
So he'll possibly more visits than me going forward. They really want him to consider implants, but he's pretty nervous about that option (I don't blame him).
And I guess the cost they mentioned is approx $3K per tooth (Includes the surgically installed post, and
custom-made crown installed). The numbers freaked him out a bit (as well as the idea of posts being installed in his jawbone), so he's at the 'thinking' stage for the near future.

But being closer to the Dentists office will make things a lot easier all around, regardless of what he decides.

We were still in the old mind set when booking things, so my appointments are a bit wonky on the time and days (Still scheduled my things around A's work... but the place is walking distance, so that was silly of me. Leaving them as they are, but any future appointments for myself I'll just set for when ever I want them. (I prefer early, and on a weekday)😄

Note to self :
It's now easily walking distance to get there, so you Don't have to book around travel time/A's work schedule any more. 😄
Remember that the next time you have to book.💕

Friday open thread: your creative process

I am absolutely flattened by work this week, and next week promises to be more of the same. It's the point in the academic year when all the Master's and PhD students have to hand in literature reviews and project proposals, and all of them suddenly panic and realise that the classes I taught them (carefully timetabled to coincide with the point at which they were meant to start work on their literature reviews and project proposals) actually contained crucial, useful information and they probably should have been paying more attention and doing the suggested follow-up activities while what I taught them was fresh in their minds. Because they haven't done this, they all, of course, contact me at once, now. It's good to be needed — I wouldn't have a job, otherwise — but I wish they didn't all need me so much and all at the same time.

Anyway, let's use another [community profile] snowflake_challenge prompt for the Friday open thread: Talk about your creative process.

I know a lot of you have already answered this in your own journals, so feel free to link to your posts in the comments rather than writing things out again. Or, answer in the comments if this is a brand new topic for you!

For an old prompt: keys

Shawn's eyes almost lit up as he saw the unattended keys gleaming among the hoarderesque piles of papers and stuff. Sometimes he really did feel that he had a special gift, even if it didn't come from the spirit world, since he could expect to be distracted by Jules' strawberry shampoo. He could tell it wasn't a real robbery, but an inside job. The "psychic" took a deep breath and waited. The secret to this bit was the pause(also that Shawn guessed it was the skeevy stepson,)

surgery update!

warning for mild medical descriptions
not being too specific but ik some ppl are squeamish about medical stuff!

so i had my surgery consult yesterday, and they just went ahead and did it under local anesthesia! i was awake for it, didnt hurt at all actually. not even the numbing injections they warned me would burn severely. my high pain tolerance is a blessing... tho sometimes a curse, as thats the reason the wound went undiscovered for several months lmao. also it wasnt sewn up (cant due to the nature of the wound and cause), but rather opened up a bit to be thoroughly cleaned out + made to where it can heal better on its own! (:

BUT YEAH im expected to be fully healed in 5 weeks, give or take, and have a followup with the surgeon in 2 weeks. im ready for this to be over with woo!! tho i was also informed theres a 20% chance it could come back in my life, since it happened once it can happen again. there are ways to try preventing it, tho its not guaranteed so the doctor just recommended to keep an eye on the area every now and then. itll start as a cyst before it bursts into a wound anyways (how did i never feel a cyst burst there?!)

im glad ive been used to medical procedures and needles my whole life, otherwise the sudden surgery during the consult would have been a problem lol. had to give blood all the time as a toddler bc i was born with hyopothyroidism. not to mention spinal procedures as a teen. and many many diagnostic procedures + MRIs in my life. ...plus ive experienced necrosis before and was totally fine with it, unbothered, meanwhile my mom was trying SO hard not to freak out in front of me LMAO

no yeah im glad i got it over with. i wanna heal already!! my bf is very helpful with cleaning and dressing the wound site too, which i appreciate since i cant do it myself (limited mobility and all, i cant reach). yesterday i was so sad i was too exhausted to draw, and mat kept having to bonk me over the head like "YOU JUST HAD SURGERY TODAY" lolll but what if i LIKE drawing... :3

tldr i got surgery, im healing, im fine :D
