Ugh, I've been terrible keeping up with anything on Dreamwidth, either posting or reading. With things being so hectic at work I just haven't felt like doing anything that requires extra brainpower, like I've been watching TV and stuff and then not writing up any of my thoughts about it lmao. Plus I used to use my spare time at work to type up an entry or catch up on the reading list and now I can't do that anymore.
The one thing I have sort of been keeping up with is the
no_true_pair fanwork challenge that's been going on this month. I've skipped a few days but I've been writing Grishaverse fic for it, and it's the most fic I've written in a while so I'm counting that as a success. I decided to start posting new fic going forward on my new writing comm
fairykiss as well as cross-posting it to AO3, just to have a little backup.
Other than that, here's a quick roundup of the stuff I've been watching and some thoughts on each of them!
Good Omens season 2 (and a re-read of the book): This is incredibly belated but holyyy shit. The shock I felt at the end of this season sjhfkjsdf. So I read the book back in high school and loved it and I always wanted a TV/movie adaptation, so getting one like 10 years later was wild already. Of course with the show came Neil Gaiman's continued insistence that Aziraphale and Crowley weren't gay lmao which is like whatever, yeah obviously he and Terry didn't write this book in 1988 intending AziraCrow to be canon. I never had any expectations for season 2. SO IMAGINE MY SURPRISE THIS SEASON. I would LOVE to go back in time and just shake my 15-year-old self by the shoulders like "you will NEVER guess what's going to happen in 15 years."
As a whole, season 2 suffers from middle book syndrome, there's not much actually going on except Aziraphale and Crowley shenanigans. And I'm perfectly fine with that lmao I love Aziraphale and Crowley shenanigans, they were pretty much the only good part of the season. Of course, having to wait until season 3 to get any sort of conclusion is going to kill me but I waited this long already, what's a few more years.
The friend I watched the show with had never read Good Omens before so I did a buddy read with her since I haven't actually re-read the book since that first time. (I was surprised just how closely season 1 actually stuck to the source material.) This is the book that got me into Terry Pratchett's writing and for that it'll always be one of my favorites. It's aged poorly in a few places, no surprise given how early in the authors' careers it was written, but I still enjoyed my re-read a lot. Very silly, very British, Crowley will forever be my poor little meow meow, etc. If you like the show I'd definitely recommend reading the book!
What We Do In The Shadows season 5: Overall, I think this season was really good. Consistently funny the whole way through (the urgent care episode, the energy vampire council, the pride parade, all the night school stuff, that bit with them reading the news...) and still keeping things interesting re: Guillermo's botched transformation. And then...it just fumbles the ball at the very end.
After FIVE seasons of Guillermo desperately wanting to be a vampire, the threat of Nandor finding out this whole season, etc, they just wrap everything up in half an hour? All right back to square one with no problems? I was thinking they'd at LEAST leave it a cliffhanger and deal with it at the start of next season. Not to mention the potential for Nandor/Guillermo drama was ripe and they didn't take advantage of any of it. So it's kind of a "wait that's it??" ending for an otherwise fun season. I guess I can only hope this will have some kind of repercussions next season but the track record for things like consequences in this show is not great.
Star Trek: Voyager working through season 5: I forget where I last updated on Voyager, like right at the beginning? So I'm a good deal farther by now haha. I'm enjoying it a lot, no surprise there. My favorite characters are probably...Seven, Tuvok, and the Doctor, so clearly I enjoy the ones who can't interact normally with people. They're all good characters though, I think Janeway's a fun captain. Kim's also very endearing, though he's been getting stuck with a lot of boring romance plots, I guess because he's the cute young one?? And because Paris and B'Elanna have been dating for a while now. I'm still waiting for them to give in and make Janeway and Chakotay make out, they sort of had something going on at the beginning then the writers gave up on it, but I'm not convinced they've given up entirely lmao. Neelix is...Neelix, they only give him the occasional plot/arc, but he's funny at least. Oh and Naomi is so cute, I love that she befriended Seven. ToT
Gundam: The Witch from Mercury season 2: Fiiinally finished the second half of GWitch!! I feel like season 2 was somehow weaker than the first, there's a lot more "big" stuff going on, but it felt like it kind of dragged and there was too much happening, plus there being so many unimportant side characters didn't help. And I was disappointed that Suletta and Miorine were apart for so much of the season. :(
ALSO THEM CHOPPING OFF GUEL'S HAIR WAS A CRIME, MY POOR BABY BOY.
All that being said, it was still a really good anime and I'd def recommend it! Suletta is a great character, I felt so bad for her this season. I liked that the main conflict hinged around her family in the end, like I know politics and war and all that are pretty much Gundam staples, but imo they should have tightened up the plot to keep the focus more personal. The Gundam fights were really cool, of course, that's the one plus side to the big space battles they featured more in season 2 haha. And a lot of the side characters had really fun designs, Guel, obviously, but also Elan, Chuchu, and Shaddiq I loved a lot. Oh and Lilique too! It's sad how refreshing it is to actually see fat characters in anime because it happens so infrequently...let alone fat characters with cute designs.
And of course the SuleMio ending!! The fact they literally have wedding rings in the last episode....and Bandai trying to be like "it's up to interpretation" jshfksjhdfskhd girl what. Anyway Suletta and Miorine are really cute and I love them a lot ♥ Please watch Witch from Mercury.
